Musings and Stuff Pt4

Musings

Firstly...

I just want to say a huge, hearty THANK YOU to everyone who left a review on Release Day.  I don't know if I've adequately expressed my thanks, so all of you have it.  I sent out 20 copies on Booksprout and got 9 reviews over all - and they were all good!  I must be doing something right ;)

So THANK YOU, again, those reviews made my day.  Hugs all around!

And as always:

HERE is Tracked Down, $0.99 ebook and $10.99 Paperback.  And if you have an interest in Snowed In and Smoked Out, they're available as well.

And the Rest...

Good reviews aside, I had a brief moment of self-pity wallowing the other day because someone bought and then returned one each of the first two books.  I know my stuff's not for everyone, but it's the first time this has happened since I released Snowed In in Nov 2017.  So it smarts a little, even if I get it.

Bah.  No sense doing the spilled milk whine thing.

I've already started Book Four, and it's not due out until August.  Yay!

Anyway.  I think I've decided to pull my books from KU and take them wide.  I've been hearing a lot about the algorithmic siphoning of legit authors page reads, and while I agree that the scammers need to be rooted out (though they'll always be back and in greater numbers)...and will freely admit that my page reads really aren't high enough to write home about (sometimes a whole $0.15 a day*!).  But either way, I remain nervous.

What if, by some miracle, my next release does really, really, well, and Amazon decides "Nope!  You suck and no one reads your stuff, therefore this is an anomaly!  Fuck you, author lady!"  I mean, it wouldn't bug me so much if Amazon was being transparent about it, but they're not - at least, not from everything I've read thus far.

So yeah.  Come Aug/Sept, I'll be putting the books wide, and all of my new stuff too.  I think I'll be keeping my KU subscription - it's not a bad service regardless, and while maybe the mass exodus of writers will mean I have to buy some other books, it's still a decent way to discover new authors and works and make sure they're getting paid for their efforts.  I'm just not sure I want to be caught up in whatever purge they've got going on over there, even if it's utterly unwittingly.

*Flippant tone aside, I remain grateful to anyone who has, or will, read my books in KU; any page reads are good page reads..and better than no page reads.

And Stuff

Next up on the docket:  Things I Need To Get Better At:

  • Marketing (ongoing process)
  • Cover Design (also an ongoing process - I spent a couple hours trying to figure out masking layers today...still don't quite get it, but playing around in the program helps)
  • Typo detection - because I keep finding them, even after I fix others...maybe the traditionally published lot have the right idea with extra months of editing time...?  But then, I wouldn't be able to publish every couple of months.
  • Writing speed...is not awful, I just need to get it to the point where it's consistent and where I don't stop to watch Supernatural with my husband when I should be writing.

Terrible Minds Flash Fiction Challenge - Strange Photos

Thought I'd have a go at one of these.   Challenge was to search "Strange Photos" and pick one, write 1000 (or 1146, in this case) or so words of whatever comes to mind because of it.  My dip into the 'strange photos' section of Google Images dumped me right in the lap of the Merrilyn Cryptid Museum  which is full of the apparently re-discovered remains of various mythological creatures, all preserved and displayed all scientific and stuff. Anyway, here is... dun dun dun... The Collector Photo Credit: Alex CF 2016 In the basement, the boxes lie. A rustling of parchment.  Flicker of the gas lamps.  Scratching of nib against paper.  But otherwise, silence.  And a forest of boxes. The man at the desk put down his pen and blotted the ink.  He surveyed his handiwork, double checking for mistakes.  There were none, so he spread a layer of paste in the appropriate space and pressed the label into it: Homomimus Alatus (Common Fae) Abov

Writing Tip Wednesday

Weekly Disclaimer Thing :  Writing, like all art, is a subjective experience.  Stuff that works for me won't necessarily work for you...though I hope it does, since I'd love for everyone to succeed.  Can never have enough books to read!  Either way, take these tips with the giant grain of salt needed to season it to your liking, since I could very well be talking out my ass. So, last week was a little bit about Fiddling, and the bare bones of my editing process.  This week will be...Outlining.  (Dun dun duuuuun!) I know people hate outlining.  It can be frustrating.  But you really should outline your stories.  Really.  Even if you're a born Pantser, you should still outline just a little bit.  It makes things so much faster . Which reminds me, I really need to re-outline my current WIP, since I'm getting lost in the middle. And that's the thing - the outline can change.  If you're in the middle of writing what you've faithfully plot

Miscellaneous Monday

Miscellaneous Monday Wherein I Babble About Random Things THE BOOKS HAVE GONE WIDE! Well, at least two of them have.  The third is still waiting out its term in KU, but as soon as that's done...Woo!  So, Snowed In  and Smoked Out  are both available on multiple platforms now!  Including Kobo SUPER PRETTY LINKS: Snowed In Smoked Out So yeah.  Check them out, if you want.  They're both still available on Amazon, of course, as paperbacks as well. Cherry Update I've washed, pitted, bagged and frozen...40 cups of cherries so far.  Which is approximately 10 L of them.  I'll use about 4cups/batch of whatever it is I'm making (jam or pie filling or whathaveyou), so I'll have a lot of canning to do.  Especially since I've still got another ~10L left to pit. And apples to pick. Speaking of jam, I used the raspberries from the garden and some blueberries from the store to make jam today.  I friggin love the colour: Yes, I know my c
